The alleged firearm used by Jennings for the ill fated assassination of McGloin, landlords agent in Killasser 1881. The conspiracy saw Francis Hennigan and Darby Dempsey jailed in Sligo for a numbers of months. William Filan and Dunleavy were not jailed but William Filan left shortly after for the US. Dempsey went to England after that. Jennings was killed as he fled and McGloin and his companion were acquitted of wilful murder in Swinford court.
The musket is apparently a Webly (Birmingham) and may have been part of the arms supplies that Michael Davitt was organising to arm the agrarians.
Excellent stuff. I often wonder whether ‘Jennings’ might be some sort or relative of my good friends Jim and Paul Jennings.
They have some Mayo ancestry, though I think their grandfather was from Ballyhaunis or thereabouts.
